Teaching Generalist EC-4
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- 6 hours in math, history, science and English
Course content is based on sound teaching practices and the state-required curriculum (TEKS). Instruction focuses on “how” to teach English language arts, reading, math, science, art, music and physical education at the elementary level.
Teaching English Language Arts and Reading 4-8
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:

Course content is designed to introduce best teaching practices in the areas of oral language, foundations of reading, word analysis skills and reading fluency, reading comprehension, written language, study and inquiry skills, viewing and representing and assessment of developing literacy.
Teaching English Language Arts and Reading 8-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- English and/or literature-18
Course content is designed to introduce best teaching practices in the areas of integrating the language arts with continuous assessment of student success in the reading process, lifelong reading and literary genres, the writing process, development and structure of English, oral communication and media messaging.
Teaching Mathematics 4-8
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- math-12 (must include pre-calculus)
Course content is designed to cover number concepts, patterns and algebra, geometry and measurement, probability and statistics, mathematical processes and perspectives, mathematical learning, instruction and assessment. The mathematics teacher will understand and use these concepts in the classroom.
Teaching Mathematics 8-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:

This course prepares participants to teach algebra, geometry, pre-calculus and calculus in a high school setting. Course content is designed to cover the following concepts: number concepts, patterns and algebra, geometry and measurement, probability and statistics, mathematical processes and perspectives, mathematical instruction, learning and assessment. The mathematics teacher will understand and use these concepts in the classroom.
Teaching Physical Education EC-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- kinesiology-24
Course content is designed to help participants understand and apply knowledge of the best teaching practices in setting up a physical education program in grades EC-12. Participants must have some content knowledge in functional anatomy and physiology.
Teaching Social Studies 4-8
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- government, history or economics-12
Course content is designed to help participants understand and apply knowledge of significant historical events and developments, multiple historical interpretations and ideas. It also teaches geographic relationships, economic systems, government, democracy, citizenship, cultural development as defined by TEKS and the foundations of social studies education. Teaching can plan and implement effective instruction and assessment in social studies.
Teaching Social Studies 8-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- government, history or economics-18
Course content is designed to help participants prepare to teach history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, social and environmental consequences of scientific discovery and technological innovation to students in grades 8-12. This is a composite certificate.
Teaching Science 4-8
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:

Course content is designed to help participants prepare to teach science in grades 4-8. Students will receive instruction in scientific inquiry and processes, physical science, life science, earth and space science, science learning, instruction and assessment. Course includes lab.
Teaching Science 8-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- Science 8-12: chemistry-12, biology-12, physics-8
- Life science: biology-12, chemistry-12
- Physical science: chemistry-12, physics-8
Course content is designed to help participants prepare to teach life science and/or physical science in a high school setting. Participant must attend all classes but will take the test based on their admission criteria at the end of the course.
Course content is designed to help participants prepare to teach any biology course in grades 8-12. Coursework includes scientific inquiry and processes, cell structure and processes, heredity and evolution of life, interdependence of life and environmental structures, diversity of life, science learning, instruction and assessment.
Course content is designed to help participants prepare to teach physical science in grades 8-12. Participants can teach chemistry and/or integrated physics and chemistry. Topics covered include scientific inquiry and processes, physics, chemistry, science learning, instruction and assessment.
Teaching Special Education EC-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- 6 hours in each of the following: math, science, English and history
Course content is designed to prepare participants to teach in a special education classroom setting. Topics include history of special education, learning disabilities, speech and language impairment, emotional and behavioral disorders, teacher standards and ethics, physical impairments, legalities of writing IEPs and classroom management for special learners.
Teaching Art EC-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- major/minor in art on bachelor's degree
Course content is designed to prepare participants to teach in an art classroom setting. Topics include how ideas for art are developed and organized from the perception of self, others, and natural and human-made environments. Also included are how children develop cognitively and artistically and how to implement effective, age-appropriate art instruction and assessment.
Teaching Music EC-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
- major/minor in music or bachelor's degree
Course content is designed to prepare participants to teach music in a classroom setting. Participants must have content knowledge in creating and arranging music, music notation, singing, and playing an instrument. Topics include visual and aural knowledge of musical perception and performance, how to provide effective music instruction and provide students with learning experiences that enhance their musical knowledge, skills, and appreciation.
Teaching Technology Applications EC-12
Specialized college-credit hours with minimum GPA of 2.5:
Course content is designed to prepare participants to teach in technology applications in a classroom setting. Topics include desktop publishing, digital graphic/animation, multimedia, video technology, web mastering, and independent study in technology applications. The EC-12 certificate will also cover curriculum in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. The holder of this certificate may not teach computer science I and II.
Teaching Health Science Technology Education 8-12
This certification prepares the participant who has training and experience in a medical field to teach health science technology in the high school setting. Instructional modules include academic science, biomedical science, integrated occupations, health sciences and employability. The participant must also finish the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities course.
Academic Criteria
- Current licensure, certification or registration by a nationally recognized accrediting agency as a health professions practitioner based on a program requiring at least two years of formal education
- Approval by the teacher preparation program of two years of wage-earning experience based on the Statement of Qualifications. Please have your signature on the SOQ notarized before sending to the ACE Program.

Teaching Trade and Industrial Education 8-12
This course prepares participants to teach in a career and technology center at the high school level. The certification area must reflect the full-time, wage-earning experience by the participant and the classes being taught. For example, a welder would be certified as Trade and Industrial/Welding and would have work experience as a welder. A list of approved job areas/certifications is available at www.sbec.state.tx.us. Topics of the course include history and philosophy, leadership and student organizations, community-based partnerships, safety in the educational environment and pedagogy and professional responsibilities.
Eligibility Requirement Options:
Option I
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Three years of full-time, wage-earning experience within the past eight years in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered
Option II
- An associate degree from an accredited institution
- Three years of full-time, wage-earning experience within the past eight year in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered
Option III
- A high school diploma or the equivalent
- Five years of full-time, wage-earning experience within the past eight years in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered

- Licensure, certification or registration by a nationally recognized accrediting agency as a professional practitioner in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered and which is based on a recognized test or measurement. If the licensure, certification or registration is not based on a recognized test or measurement, then passing the appropriate National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) assessment is required.

Statement of Qualifications The Texas Education Agency data collection form must be completed by each applicant seeking secondary career and technology educational certification. The information requested is a record of all trade and/or occupational experience including full-time teaching acquired since leaving high school. The information is reviewed and used as the basis for issuance of certification. |
Master Reading Teacher
Prerequisite: Texas certified teacher with three years of teaching experience
This certification prepares certified teachers whose primary duty is to teach reading and to serve as a reading mentor to other teachers. The goals of the MRT program are to provide proficient teachers with the tools to enhance their expertise in the content and pedagogy of reading and to guide fellow teachers in improving their reading instruction. The curriculum of this course helps to prepare the participants or the MRT exam.
