Core Curriculum Purpose Statement

As the curricular entity defining the range of skills and abilities students are expected to master while in attendance at Lamar State College-Orange, the core curriculum encompasses the common body of knowledge, values, skills and perspectives that help define an educated person. The objectives associated with the core curriculum encompass what every associate degree graduate of the institution should be able to think, know or do. The core curriculum furthermore serves as the foundation upon which the remainder of the baccalaureate is based, and its completion prepares students to learn effectively through their college years and throughout their lives.

Core Curriculum Transfer

If a student successfully completes the core curriculum, that block of courses may be transferred to any other Texas public institution of higher education and must be substituted for the receiving institution's core curriculum. A student shall receive academic credit for each of the courses transferred and may not be required to take additional core curriculum courses at the receiving institution.

A student who transfers without completing the core curriculum shall receive academic credit within the core curriculum of the receiving institution for each of the courses that the student has successfully completed in the core of the sending institution. The student may be required to satisfy the remaining course requirements in the core curriculum of the receiving institutions.

The LSC-O Curriculum Committee placed significant value on the need for a computer course for all students. As a foundation course which provides knowledge and skills used across the curriculum, the computer course is viewed as an essential element of core education.

The emphasis in our society on a healthy and active lifestlye is mirrored in the LSC-O core curriculum requirement of PHED. The student has the option of choosing among a variety of lecture and activity classes, which focus on general health and the impact in everyday living.
