New and engaging continuing education and workforce training courses are coming up in July and August Lamar State College-Orange. The college has released its July and August line-up of classes.
To keep pace with the changes in Microsoft’s Office suite of software, three classes are coming up. “Microsoft Access Intermediate” will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 21 through July 30, 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost of this course is $65. “MS Excel Basics will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday, August 4 and 6, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and “Microsoft Word Basics” will meet Tuesday and Thursday, August 11 and 13, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost for these two courses is $45.
“Cajun Dance” class is coming! Come and let the good times roll with instructors Steve LeBlanc and Debrah Weeks. This class will teach the Cajun two-step, waltz and jitterbug, guaranteed cures for two left feet. Classes will meet Mondays, July 6 through 23, from 6:30-8 p.m. The cost for this class is $49 for singles and $89 for couples. Want more dancing? Jessica Scarborough will teach “Beginning Hip Hop Dance” on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. The class starts July 14 and ends July 30. The cost of this class is $50 per person.
For the artistically inclined jewelry lover, two classes are being offered. The first class is “Making Beaded Jewelry,” which will be offered on two Tuesdays, July 21 and 28, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This class gives students hands-on fun stringing natural, semi-precious, and glass beads on various media. Students will learn to create a set of jewelry for a gift or that special occasion. The course includes designing, stringing, and finishing jewelry pieces using all types of beads and findings. The cost of this class is just $49, and students will need to purchase a small amount of supplies, valued at approximately $40.
The second jewelry class is “Making Fine Silver Jewelry,” offered Thursdays July 23 through August 13, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. In this class gives students will learn to create pieces of fine silver jewelry from precious metal clay. Expand your creativity to include the art of fine silver jewelry design. Learn to design and finish unique pieces of wearable art. Instruction will include firing and finishing the art. The cost of the class is $89, and supplies will cost an additional $60. The instructor for both jewelry classes is Angela Burch.
“Photoshop Elements 7.0” will be offered on Mondays, August 3 through 31, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Instructor Eino Lilback will help students learn to use Adobe’s latest version of Photoshop Elements image processing software to edit, create and share digital images. Improvements to Photoshop Elements include an overhauled interface, refined selection tools, a guided edit mode, enhanced retouching tools, new tools to create composite images, special artwork effects, a streamline image organizer, simple image fixes, and more. This is a hands-on course and each student will have computer access to practice various image editing techniques. No prerequisites, but a basic understanding of digital photography is recommended. The cost of this class is $145.
A free workshop is also in the line-up. “Twogether in Texas” is a pre-marital education workshop provided by the State of Texas. If a couple completes the eight-hour workshop, they will receive a certificate that can be taken to the county clerk’s office and the $60.00 state fee, as well as the 72-hour waiting period after issuance of the license will be waived. In other words, they only pay $12.00 for the license fee and can get married as soon as they have the marriage license in their hands. Couples can choose from Saturday classes on either July 11 or August 8, from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
The monthly “Step Aerobics, Cardio Mix & Muscle Toning” class continues to meet Mondays through Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Student Center (SC). This is a 60-minute class of heart-pounding, body-moving and muscle-pumping fun. Enjoy a workout that enhances the body’s muscular endurance.
The college’s workforce development office is offering two helpful training opportunities for dental professionals. First, the “Registered Dental Assistant Course and Exam” will be offered July 30 and 31, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This course prepares clinical dental assistants to meet Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) examination requirements. It includes review of radiology, infection control, and jurisprudence. At the end of the course review, students will be administered the registered dental assistant examination. The cost of this class is only $150. The second course, “Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Course and Exam” is specifically designed to prepare dental assistants and hygienists to obtain certification in nitrous oxide monitoring as mandated by the State Board of Dental Examiners. A comprehensive review on the general guidelines and industry standards for nitrous oxide conscious sedation will be presented. Upon completion of this course, the participant will be administered the required examination. This course will be offered Saturday, August 1, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and costs only $100.
Two welding classes are also on the schedule this summer. “Combination Welder I” provides students with instruction in MIG, stick, and TIG welding procedures. The course also includes the National Center for Construction Education and Research Core curriculum: safety, blueprints, math, hand and power tools, workplace behaviors, and communication skills. The class also includes oxy-acetylene cutting, air gouging and materials preparation procedures. The dates and times for this class, which costs $2,750, will be Mondays through Fridays, June 15 through July 10, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
A fast-track course in TIG welding will be offered on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. beginning August 8 through August 29. In this course, students will receive hands-on instruction in safety, use of the equipment, filler metals and shielding gases. Additionally, students will learn how to pad in all positions using TIG on carbon plate steel. The course will cover multi-pass V-butt open groove welds with carbon steel plate in the 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G positions. An entrance examination will be provided to applicants to determine whether they are ready to undertake this training. This course, which costs $995, is preparation for future TIG training for carbon steel pipe and low-alloy and stainless steel pipe. Financial assistance for these two classes may be available to those who qualify.
The “Forklift Operator” class is an OSHA-approved, seven-hour, fast-track training that includes forklift design, controls and instrumentation, comprehensive pre-use inspection procedures and hands-on instruction of operation proficiency. This class will meet Friday from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, July 10 and 11, and costs $100.
