LSC-O Honors Creative Students

Five hours after winning an art award at Lamar State College-Orange, Christopher Fields was elected Student Government Association vice-president. That was just an average day for Fields, a Bridge City, TX native, whose collegiate activities include Quiz Bowl competition.
“Participating in activities is just as important as getting good grades when applying for scholarships,” said Fields, who plans a career in adolescent counseling.
Fields and other winners of LSC-O’s Cypress Branches Literary Journal contest received their prizes at a ceremony on April 16 in the Ron E. Lewis Library. Dr. Michael Shahan, LSC-O president, and Carla Dando, dean of instruction, presented the awards.
Winners in the three-dimensional art category were Fields, first place; Jessica Ferguson, Orange, TX, second place; Scott Laudano, Call, TX, third place; and Ashley Bray, Orange, honorable mention. Ashley Daniel, of Orange, won first, second, and third place in the two-dimensional art category. Her watercolor, “Splash of Color”, which appears on the cover of the journal, won the grand prize of $300. Andrea Haynes of Buna, TX took honorable mention in that category.
In the prose category, winners were Md Rajibul Hasan, Orange, first place; Rachel Suire, Bridge City, second place; Kristen Clark, Orange, third place, and Derek Borel, Orange, honorable mention. Kyle Thompson, Orange, winner of first, second, and third places for poetry, read his winning poem, “My Trip” during the ceremony. Honorable mention in that category went to Barbara Ball of Orange.
Photography winners were Alexa Humble, Orange, first place; Shanita Maceda, Orange, second place; Geneva Adams, Bridge City, third place; and Tyler Derouen, Orange, honorable mention. In a special art-analysis competition, Brett Heil, of Orange, won a framed print, donated by its artist, Steve Hodges. Lisette Hodges presented that prize on behalf of her husband.
Prizes were $200, first place; second place, $100; and third place, $50; and honorable mention, $25 in each category except two-dimensional art, for which the first-place winner received $300 as grand prize.
Faculty and staff honored for their submissions to the journal were Dr. Matt McClure, cartoon; Pam Hardin, Randy Ford and Carolyn Mello, poetry; Bonnie Dorman, photography; Bobbi Miller, art; and Joan Stinehart, art, photography, and prose.
Fifty-one students entered the annual contest. Works of the winners and faculty/staff contributors are included in the publication. Judges were Kathryn Rector, Carolyn Mello, Carol Abshire, and Dr. Matt McClure. Dr. Arlene Turkel, associate professor of English, coordinated the journal and the ceremony. Copies are available online at www.lsco.edu/PublicInfo/Public_Information.htm and in print at the LSC-O Library and the Orange Public Library.
The Cypress Branches competition is open to any student enrolled in at least one LSC-O class. For information on next year’s contest, contact Dr. Turkel at Arlene.Turkel@lsco.edu.
