LSC-O students get another taste of “plant-life” at Chevron Phillips

On Wednesday, May 6, a group of Lamar State College-Orange industrial technology students toured the Chevron Phillips Plant in Orange. The students received a pre-tour safety orientation training conducted by Earl Geiser and Clay Lewis. They learned information about the site and how the plant is committed to safety and the environment. In addition, the class was informed about how Chevron Phillips produces high-density polyethylene that is used for products that we all use every day like milk jugs, plastic wrap on bread, and Rubbermaid containers.

A walk through tour of the process unit was conducted where students were able to see major operational and equipment features of the site.  Also, part of the Informative tour explained the production of polyethylene from the reactor to the final stage where the finished product is loaded into railcars. The highlight of the class included a visit to the Central Control Room where the students interacted with operators who control the process using state-of-the-art technology.

Adjunct instructor, Cheryl Pollard, states, “The students had a positive experience and gained a better understanding of process equipment and operating methods”.

The industrial technology program, which is part of LSC-O’s Business and Technology division, is designed to develop basic skills through various specialized courses to prepare students for entry-level positions in the petrochemical industry. Upon successful completion of the coursework, students will be able to transfer to a four-year degree in Industrial Technology at Lamar University. After one year, students will be able to transfer to Lamar Institute of Technology and/or McNeese State University to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree.

The Business and Technology Division offers programs including computer science,
information technology, process technology, industrial technology, business management/accounting/entrepreneurship, medical office, medical transcription, customer service representative, information clerk and information management specialist.

We have excellent faculty and staff to help students get started.  Visit our different departments today online at lsco.edu or call (409) 882-3027 for more details.
