LSC-O ANNOUNCES ITS SPRING 2009 GRADUATES
Lamar State College-Orange Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Sheila Joyner will serve as the guest speaker at the LSC-O spring 2009 commencement on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m. at the Lutcher Theater.
Dr. Sheila Joyner grew up in Kansas. She joined the military after graduating from high school and spent two years in the U.S. Army. She later attended Pittsburg State University earning both a Bachelor of Arts degree (1979) and a Masters degree (1981) in political science. As a graduate student, she experienced her first taste of teaching in higher education and immediately set the course for her career.
While teaching for 10 years at Crowder College (MO), Dr. Joyner completed a Doctorate in higher education administration at the University of Arkansas (1989). She then left the classroom to serve in a variety of administrative positions. As director of International Education at Crowder College, Dr. Joyner established a sister city agreement with Adelaide, Australia to promote the college’s entry into the world solar car race, developed a visiting faculty program with a college in England, and secured grant funds to participate in the Soviets Visit Middle America program.
Serving as the Assistant Dean of Instruction at Alpena Community College (MI) from 1991 to 1994, she extended her grant writing successes to over $1 million and created acknowledged assessment systems required by national accrediting agencies. The long cold winters of northern Michigan convinced her that a position in a warmer climate was desirable.
Dr. Joyner has spent the past 15 years as the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Lamar State College-Orange. She has represented the college on several state boards, given presentations at national conferences, published articles in academic journals, and received numerous awards for both her professional and civic activities. She recently moved to The Woodlands and will be taking a faculty position with Sam Houston State University this fall. She is married to her husband, Owen, and has two sons, Christopher and Jason Haile.
Dr. J. Michael Shahan, LSC-O president, will introduce the special guest and confer the degrees. Dr. Joyner will also perform the certification of candidates. Other LSC-O dignitaries on the program are Bobbie Burgess, vice president for student services and auxiliary enterprises, presentation of graduating class; and Carla Dando, dean of instruction, recognition of honor graduates. Please join us in congratulating our outstanding students!
