LSC-O Offers Great Continuing Education Courses
(Jewelry-making, Crafts, Spanish, and Computer Software)

The Continuing Education and Workforce Development Office at Lamar State College-Orange announces more classes from its fall 2009 schedule.

For artistically inclined students, three craft courses taught by local artisan Angela Burch are coming up soon.  “Making Fused Glass Jewelry and Icicles” will be taught at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from October 6-20.  This class will teach learners to make fused glass jewelry and decorations such as icicles and sun-catchers.  A second class, “Making Wire Wrapped Jewelry and Ornamentation” will be held on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m., from October 8-22.  In this class, students will learn to make wire-wrapped decorations such as stars, hearts, dragonflies, and other shapes out of materials such as wire, beads, and crystals.  Items from these two classes would make beautiful holiday gifts and decorations! These two classes cost $89 each and supplies cost $25 and will be purchased at the first class.

Angela will also teach the class “Making Fine Silver Jewelry.” This course, which costs just $89, will teach students to create pieces of fine silver jewelry from precious metal clay.  Learn to design and finish unique pieces of wearable art.  Instruction will include firing and finishing the art.  Supplies cost $60 and will be purchased at the first class.  The class will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays October 27-November 10.

Two Spanish language classes are available to students this fall.  “Conversational Spanish I” will give students the tools for correct pronunciation in a very simple way.  It focuses on everyday conversations for home, restaurants, or telephone.  In every lesson, students will also learn about Spanish news and culture to enrich the learning process.  The class will meet on Monday nights from 6-8 p.m. October 5-December 7 and the fee of $95 includes the textbook.

For those in the health professions, “Conversational Spanish for Nurses” will be available on Wednesday nights 6-8 p.m. from October 7 through December 9.  Dedicated healthcare providers know that effective communication is the key to providing patients with the high quality of care they deserve.  This class and book will provide nurses with all the tools needed to communicate confidently and effectively with Spanish-speaking patients.  The fee of $95 includes the textbook and language CDs.

Back by popular demand, dance instructors Steve LeBlanc and Debrah Weeks will be teaching a “Jitterbug” class for those who have always wanted to learn this dance!  This dance is not only great fun—it’s great exercise too!  Don’t miss the chance to learn to dance from the best.  Classes will be held on Wednesdays, beginning October 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and running through October 28.  The cost is $49 per person or $89 per couple.

All those interested in expanding their knowledge of computing and software would surely enjoy taking one or more of the upcoming computer technology courses.  “Microsoft Access Intermediate” will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., October 6 through 15.  The cost for this class is just $65.  “Introduction to Computers” will offer people with limited computer experience or training an introduction to computer components, terminology, and more.  This course will be offered on Tuesday, October 20, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and costs only $35.  Finally, “Beginning Computers for Senior Citizens” is free and will be offered on Wednesday, October 14, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Another free workshop called “Twogether in Texas” will be offered.  This pre-marital education workshop is provided by the State of Texas. If a couple completes the eight-hour workshop, they will receive a certificate that can be taken to the county clerk’s office and the $60.00 state fee, as well as the 72-hour waiting period after issuance of the license will be waived. In other words, they only pay $12.00 for the license fee and can get married as soon as they have the marriage license in their hands.  Classes are offered on the second Saturday of every month, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

To request a complete schedule of all classes scheduled for the spring or to sign up for any of these courses, contact the Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at 409-882-3321.  To visit with the staff in person, stop by the office located at 506 Green Ave.
