What is Work Keys?

In consultation with employers, educators and experts in employment and training requirements, ACT has identified key generic employability skills -- skills crucial to effective performance in most jobs. The following critical skills form the basis of the Work Keys system:

  • Reading for Information
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Listening
  • Writing
  • Teamwork
  • Applied Technology
  • Locating Information
  • Observation

Additional skill scales will be developed as needed. After identifying these critical generic workplace skills, ACT developed the Work Keys system, which consists of:

  • Profiling (job analysis) to determine the current skill requirements of jobs
  • Skill assessment to determine the current skills of individuals
  • Instructional support to help educators/trainers as they assist learners in improving their skills

These components are linked together with management information and reporting services.
