The LSC-O Quiz Bowl team, led by sponsor Eric Owens, is headed to the NAQT Community College Championship in St. Louis, Mo., on Feb. 28. The tournament is the culmination of the 2012-2013 season, in which the LSC-O team has faced only one loss. During their last tournament in January at the NAQT Community College Sectional Championship in Miss., they carried a 10-0 record, and brought home three of the four trophies awarded at the tournament.

“At the last tournament we had the two top scorers on our team, which is highly unusual,” said Owens. “We truly dominated the other teams, and I have full faith that we can do that again this time around.”

The Quiz Bowl team consists of veteran members, Matt Talbot, Shane Marburger, Jefffree Hoke, and new members, Sarah Leger, Jerad Jurgensmier, and Jacob Gorton. All bringing a different strength to the team, they divide up quiz categories between members to cover the most topics, a strategy that seems to be working for them. To prepare for the quiz bowl tournaments, they meet twice a week where they spend hours reviewing random topics, ranging from math and science to current events and Broadway.

A victory at this tournament would mean the team would move on to the NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament, where they would compete against four-year schools. That tournament is to be held in Chicago in April.

“We are ready to show them what this small school in Southeast Texas can do,” said member Jared Jurgensmier.

With an all-star team, Owens isn’t intimidated by larger schools that LSC-O competes against.

“I could literally spend about 30 more years doing this,” he said, “and never have another team as good as this one.”
