John "Jay" Gilchrist
John, a 21-year-old sophomore at LSC-O, has two passions: helping others and the field of culnary arts. After witnessing conflicts among his fellow students while in high school, he saw the lack of support some students received while they were going through tough times. This desire to help others and give support to those who need it, led him to decide on a degree in Sociology.
After volunteering at soup kitchens, he decided he could connect his two loves- helping others and cooking. With both a Sociology degree and a culinary certificate, he hopes to open up a restaurant and a soup kitchen in the future. Follwing his intended graduation in the spring of 2013, he plans to continue his work in soup kitchens while attending the Austin Culinary Academy.
John has been active in the SGA since coming to LSC-O, and has held several leadership positions within the organization. He acted as Communicator in 2011, President during the 2011-2012 academic year, and is currently the Vice President for the 2012-2013 academic year. His leadership and dedication to the SGA has allowed him to be a part of the Texas State University System's Student Advisory Board since 2011, and he was recently elected as Student Advisory Board's Vice Chair for this academic year.
These student organizations have allowed him to expand on his goals of helping others through community service. He volunteers at local soup kitchens, the Lion's Club Carnival, local food drives, Relay For Life, and other community events.
