ORANGE, TX – Lamar State College Orange's new Director of Admissions and Recruiting, Bayleigh Smith, is already making an impact on campus through her commitment to student success and campus involvement.
Smith joined LSCO in May. She oversees admissions, recruiting, and student life. Her responsibilities range from visiting high schools to promote LSCO's academic programs to helping students navigate the admissions process and connecting them with resources once they arrive on campus.
In addition to leading admissions and recruiting efforts, Smith works as the advisor for the Student Government Association (SGA), giving her a unique opportunity to support students throughout their college journey.
"I knew I wanted something that was going to be hands-on with students and [make] an impact," Smith said. "I had mentors and people in my life during pivotal moments that led me in my bachelor's degree and continuing in my education; I always wanted to be that person for students."
Smith began her higher education career at Lamar University as a first-generation student, where she worked as a campus tour guide while earning her bachelor's degree. That experience sparked her passion for higher education and led to many years of professional experience in admissions, recruiting, campus tours, and academic support services.
When the opportunity to join LSCO became available, Smith said the campus culture and sense of community immediately stood out. "The culture here and the community here are top-notch," she said. "You don't get that at many places."
Smith is focusing much of her attention on supporting SGA's efforts to increase student engagement and campus involvement. This year, student leaders are focusing on creating stronger connections among students and ensuring everyone feels they have a voice on campus.
"The executive officers of the Student Government Association, one of their passions is to really start bringing more community and connection for students on to the campus. "
Most importantly, Smith wants students to know that her office is always open.
"I think the biggest thing is don't be afraid to take that next step," she said. "So, if that step is simply just coming and chatting with me, I’m located in the Student Success Center on the second floor, you can ask for me, and they'll point you in the direction. You can email me [or] call me; I'm happy to connect students wherever they need to be."
Outside of work, she describes herself as a family-oriented homebody who enjoys spending time with loved ones, reading, binge-watching television, and creating invitations and designs for family events.
