Behind the Gator: Meet the Student Inside Tilly
September 30, 2026
ORANGE, TX –The beloved Lamar State College Orange mascot, Tilley, was introduced to campus in 2019. Since then, many students have had the chance to bring the gator to life behind the mask.
This school year, LSCO student Isaiah Dumas is stepping up to the plate.
A welding student, student worker, and active member of the Student Government Association (SGA), Dumas did not originally plan to become Tilley. After being asked to wear the mascot costume for a couple of events, he quickly realized how much he enjoyed connecting with people through the character.
“At first, I wasn't planning on doing it,” Dumas said. “But once I tried it, I realized it was actually fun, and I decided to commit to it.”
While the costume can be challenging, especially in the Southeast Texas heat, Dumas says the experience has been rewarding. One of his favorite moments so far was participating in graduation ceremonies, and he is especially looking forward to future community events where he can interact with children and families.
“Seeing all the little kids smile brings me joy,” he said.
Beyond his role as the mascot, Dumas has become heavily involved on campus. He credits his involvement, along with support from faculty and staff, for helping him find a sense of belonging at LSCO. Through his work with SGA, he has also been able to help other students get connected and make the most of their college experience.
He encourages all students to get involved, make friends, and take advantage of opportunities on campus. He hopes his own journey from a new student to an involved leader on campus will inspire others to find their passions, mentors, and friends at school. “Always have friends that are close to you,” Dumas said. “Enjoy your time at LSCO.”
Whether he's representing students in SGA, studying welding, or bringing Tilley to life at campus events, Dumas is helping create the welcoming spirit that makes Lamar State College Orange feel like home.
