Student Government Association Prepares for New Year of Engagement at LSCO
July 13, 2026
The Student Government Association at Lamar State College Orange is preparing for
a new academic year focused on strengthening student engagement, expanding campus involvement and
ensuring students have a voice in shaping their college experience. With newly elected
officers and a commitment to building a stronger campus community, SGA leaders are
looking forward to a busy and productive year.
Chloe Abshire, who will serve as SGA president, said her journey with the organization
began during the Fall 2024 semester when she was searching for ways to become more
involved at LSCO. “I joined SGA in the Fall 2024 semester because I wanted to meet
new people, get more involved on campus, and give back to the students at LSCO,” Abshire
said. “I saw it as an opportunity to make a positive impact and help create a welcoming
environment for everyone.”
Now leading the organization, Abshire said she is eager to work alongside fellow student
leaders and college employees to enhance student life across campus. “As president,
I’m most excited to work alongside our faculty and fellow SGA members to plan events
and improve student life on campus,” she said. “I’m also looking forward to the work
that happens behind the scenes to make every student feel welcomed, supported and
connected at LSCO.”
Abshire will work closely with incoming Vice President Madison Gault throughout the
academic year. Together, they will help guide the organization’s initiatives, oversee meetings and
support officers and senators as they advocate for the student body.
“We’ll be working closely together to keep SGA running smoothly by leading meetings,
supporting our officers and senators, and making sure our projects and events are
organized and successful throughout the year.”
SGA Advisor Baileigh Smith, LSCO’s Director of Admissions and Recruiting, said she
is excited about the vision the new student leaders have for the organization. One
of the primary goals for the coming year is creating more opportunities for students
to connect with the campus and one another.
“What I am most excited about with working with SGA and the new officers is the goal
to really unite the campus culture more,” Smith said. “Bringing more opportunities
to students and bringing more opportunities for them to connect to campus [will be] a
big focus.”
As the fall semester begins, SGA members will play a visible role during Welcome Week
activities, helping new students become familiar with campus resources and organizations.
Abshire said Welcome Week remains one of the events she is most excited about.
“I’m especially looking forward to Welcome Week,” she said. “It’s always exciting
to meet our new students, reconnect with returning students, and help create a fun,
welcoming atmosphere as everyone starts a new school year.”
Throughout the year, SGA members will organize campus activities, volunteer in the
community, represent student concerns and help promote engagement across the college.
The organization also serves as a direct link between students and college leadership,
allowing student voices to be heard on issues affecting campus life.
Both Abshire and Smith encourage students interested in leadership and service to
consider becoming involved with SGA. “Joining SGA has shown me that even small efforts
can make a big difference in someone’s college experience,” Abshire said. “It’s a
great opportunity to meet new people, develop leadership skills, have your voice heard,
and help make LSCO an even better place for all students.”
Students looking to get involved will have an opportunity to do so early in the semester.
According to Abshire, SGA currently has five senator positions available. Applications
will open during the first week of classes, giving interested students a chance to represent their
peers and contribute to campus initiatives. Students can learn more about the positions
and upcoming meetings during Welcome Week activities and through SGA outreach efforts
throughout the semester.
