Dr. Matthew McClure is a biology professor at Lamar State College Orange (LSCO) with an impressive accumulation of education and teaching experience. His passion for biology and surplus of knowledge overflow into the courses he teaches.
Dr. McClure holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Lamar University, a Master of Science in Zoology from Texas A&M University, and a PhD in Zoology from Texas A&M University. During his academic career, he worked as a part time instructor at Blinn College for two summer terms and a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Biology at Texas A&M University, where he taught both undergraduate and graduate laboratory courses in biology. Here, he began applying the knowledge he acquired as a student to his role as an instructor.
After graduating with a PhD, he began his role as a biology faculty member at LSCO. Additionally, he taught at Lamar University for a summer term early in his career. During his time at LSCO, he has taught lectures and laboratories, served on various committees, and participated in curriculum development. Dr. McClure has excelled in his craft, boasting nearly two dozen employee awards across seven categories.
As a professor, he prefers to maintain an “old school” teaching style. He wants students to engage in course content, emphasizing the importance of taking thorough notes during lectures and studying diligently. He draws his inspiration as an instructor from personal experiences as a student, adapting lessons to what he believes will give his own students the best chance for success.
“I teach students the way that I best learned as a student,” Dr. McClure said. “I’m pretty old school, so I am a firm believer in students coming to class, listening to lectures, taking notes, and reading the textbook.”
Outside of work, Dr. McClure is actively involved in the community and beyond. He is a participating researcher at the Texas Invasive Species Institute, a volunteer with the Texas Master Naturalist program, and serves on the Board of Directors at Revive Church in Nederland. His passion for research and love for the surrounding community drive him in both his personal and professional life. He strives to make an impact on the lives of his students and in each outlet he is a part of.
