Lamar State College’s new Dean of Student Services, Kristen Stovall, stepped into her role with a clear vision of her goals for supporting students. With experience in higher education and a track record of championing students to success, she brings heartfelt dedication to service.
Stovall’s background consists of 15 years of working in higher education. Her expertise is vast, spanning across areas of instruction, academic leadership, workforce development, and student success.
Prior to joining the Gator community, Stovall served as the dean of business and STEM at Killgore College. Before that, she was a department chair and instructor at Trinity Valley Community College and an advisor and lecturer at the University of Texas at Tyler.
“Across these roles, I’ve focused on connecting education to real-world opportunities and helping students find meaningful, rewarding career paths,” Stovall said. “I love watching students discover their potential.”
She boasts a Master of Science in Human Resource Development from the University of Texas at Tyler and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University. She credits her communication and leadership skills to her collegiate courses.
“My education helped me understand both the business and human sides of leadership,” she said. “The coursework in human resource development strengthened my skills in communication, organizational leadership, and talent development- all of which are essential in higher education.”
Her move to LSCO was sparked by shared values and a positive work culture. Her desire to serve students and the surrounding community was undeniably matched by her now coworkers.
“What attracted me most to LSCO was its deep commitment to students and community,” she said. “The college has built a culture that values relationships, belonging, and genuine student success. Having previously worked with Dr. Elmore and Dr. Skopek, I knew this was a team that leads with both heart and purpose.”
The most exciting part of this new role for Stovall is the chance to have a hand with the student experience. She strives to push students to reach their potential and provide accessible education for those in the area. Pursuing partnerships and student first initiatives inspire her in the work she does.
“I’m most excited about the opportunity to help shape the student experience, both inside and outside the classroom,” Stovall said. “LSCO is doing incredible work to make education accessible and relevant. I’m eager to build partnerships, strengthen student support systems, and champion initiatives that make students feel seen, valued, and capable of success.”
In her free time, Stovall enjoys time with her kids. She also likes exploring unique, local restaurants and hanging out with her friends and family. Being involved within the community keeps her busy in her downtime, as well.
Stovall has enjoyed her time in the Gator community. She is eager to continue growing alongside her coworkers and working towards bettering the student experience continually.
“I’m so excited to be part of the LSCO family,” she said. “The people here have been so welcoming, and there’s a genuine sense of teamwork and purpose that makes this college special. I can’t wait to see the great things ahead for our students and the region we serve.”
