Nursing Simulation Center
The LSCO Nursing Simulation Center allows vocational and associate degree nursing students the opportunity to master skills in a controlled learning environment. Students are able to apply the information learned in the classroom setting to a patient scenario. They are able to assess the patient, deliver care, and see the patient interaction to the nursing interventions.
Low Fidelity Task Trainer
Low fidelity simulations mirror actual skills and basic scenarios closely, focusing on the smaller concepts. These smaller skills and basic scenarios are the foundation for more detailed nursing scenarios. LSCO nursing students begin with low fidelity simulations and move towards the more complex, high fidelity simulations as they progress through the nursing curriculum.
High Fidelity Simulations
The Nursing Simulation Center has four high fidelity simulation rooms. These allow faculty to simulate clinical scenarios involving medical surgical, pediatrics, obstetrics, and critical care. These simulated experiences resemble situations the nursing student will experiences in the actual clinical setting and allow the student to learn without risk of harming patients. High fidelity simulations present the student with realistic scenarios containing multiple elements for student interaction.
The Nursing Simulation Center uses Laerdal Sim Pad in both the low and high fidelity simulations. These enhance clinical realism and challenge critical thinking skills with dynamic monitoring and patient interaction. A touchscreen Laerdal Patient Monitor provides concise clinical feedback and simulation physiological parameters including heart rate, ECG, SpO2, BP, RR, Temperature, etCO2 and 12 lead EKG. The use of microphone enables effective two-way communication with the patient, adding “life” to the simulation experience.
By allowing students the opportunity to perform skills and deliver patient care in a controlled learning environment, students perceive themselves as successful and enter the clinical area with increased self confidence in identifying patient safety issues.
