Crockett receives community service award

A woman who has been part of the Lamar State College Orange family since 1996 was recognized for her commitment and volunteerism in education as the recipient of the Julie and Ben Rogers Community Service Award.

Dr. Suzonne Crockett received the award at a ceremony Thursday at Lamar University.

In honoring her, LSCO President, Dr. Thomas Johnson, said what makes Dr. Crockett so deserving of the award is that she’s known on campus as the LSCO cheerleader, inspiring the faculty, staff, and students every single day.

In her nomination letter, former LSCO President, Dr. Michael Shahan, said “Suzonne’s greatest contribution to our community is her belief in the potential for education to improve the lives of our citizens.”

Outside of her role as the Associate Dean of Academic Studies, Dr. Crockett has worked countless hours for the annual Kids 2 College summer camp, which allows school-age children the chance to experience college. She has formed relationships with businesses and community members who, in turn, have provided scholarships for students to participate in the program. Each year the program grows bigger and better.

As the wife of a preacher, Dr. Crockett performs an array of tasks to impact and improve the lives of her church family at Mount Olive Baptist Church.

She serves on the Executive Board of Directors of the Greater Orange Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Stark Community Board. Dr. Crockett is a graduate of Leadership Southeast Texas, and probably one of her favorite volunteer positions is as a classroom volunteer at West Orange Cove Consolidated Independent School District.

On campus, Dr. Crockett served on the Leisure Learning Committee, Math Department Committee, and in 2018, was appointed by our Chancellor to serve on the committee that hired the new president.

“She is very well known in our community and has earned the reputation as a community leader for her tireless and, I do mean tireless efforts, to improve Orange, Texas,” wrote Butch Campbell in Dr. Crockett’s nomination letter.

Dr. Crockett simply embodies the volunteer spirit that separates Lamar State College Orange from other entities in our community.

The Julie and Ben Rogers Community Service Award is awarded to four people each year, one from each Lamar campus – Lamar University, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College Port Arthur, and Lamar State College Orange.
